fire safety, Bronx fire, PSA

After this tragic fire in New York, killing 17 people so far due to smoke inhalation, this is a reminder to please not chock open fire/smoke doors in *any* situation.

If you need to get something big through, have someone hold it open. If there are issues with key access, complain to the person responsible and cite the fire safety codes and this accident.

Fire stairs are kept sealed (and in larger buildings, at positive pressure) to keep the air inside safe, and it only takes one door chocked open to neutralise this vital feature, resulting in preventable deaths from the poisonous smoke.
In this case, any deaths would almost certainly have been entirely limited to the one apartment in which the fire started, if two smoke doors had not been kept open.
