Another important part — if you’re discussing a ‘go’ cue on comms, not actually triggering one, you always use “gee oh” instead to refer to it, like an escape sequence. This is to prevent any unintended cuing.
Similarly, “stop” in case of an emergency is repeated three times, a bit like mayday in aviation.

By having a standard format, a good operator can hit the button on the ‘G’ of ‘go’ every time, by anticipating the rhythm, and with muscle memory.

Meanwhile, tonight, I have heard:
“Lights change!”
“Go next cue”
“Lights cue”
“(2 minute silence) ... go”
“Lights next cue go please”
“Cue go”
“Go cue”
“Bows go”
“Blackout now”
“Go” (but someone else talking, not actually a real go, causing a cue to be triggered early)

The client I’m working for is so bad at calling lighting cues, it’s comical. It isn’t rocket science!
“Standby LX [number]. (~10-20 seconds gap) LX [number] Go.”
Or, if cues are too fast for that: “Standby LX [number] through [number]. (Gap) LX Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go...”

Congrats @vicorva on a super successful Kickstarter!! Can’t wait to read the book & play the ttrpg. Love to see (& support) realistic autistic characters written by autistic authors. :blobcat_hearthug:

normal covid things in a world with borders

• whether you are deported to an ongoing outbreak depending on whether you learned React.js 2 years ago
• can’t get job due to distance despite the fact that it’s 100% doable remotely and commuting is a public hazard
• having to go in person to Unemployment cos your transgender face consistently fails facial ID algorithms
• medical care depending on whether you satisfy Unemployment or not
• visa depending on whether you satisfy Unemployment or not
• Unemployment depending on whether you satisfy visa or not
• border cops doubling down when you point out this circular dependency
• can’t update name on docs because no law considers the existence of trans immigrants
• "let’s hope it doesn’t cause…. complications" recruiter re: you being trans
• can’t send money to children cos bank account frozen due to expired visa
• can’t renew their visa without leaving the country, which is impossible
• children having to go in person to Delhi/Mumbai to renew their passport when, well, look at the news
• people from orgs blaming immigrants for covid add you on masto

Pseudoephedrine is my new best friend

Finally getting to design the battery system for my cabin. It's nothing fancy, but it will be quite a lot cheaper when all is said and done

Best of all, I can make it in my kitchen with ordinary household supplies

Hopefully will have a prototype soon

Here's version 3 of the bucks & jigs for forming my leatherman holster. The dark shape is the blank sheet that's bent into the holster. There's a jig underneath, a buck that flips over to do double duty, two parts to form the fold of the belt loop to meet the back of the main body. Then there'll be a copper rivet to hold it closed.

*timeline is full of errors*
*is hit with flashback of thinking "that's fine I'll fix it all up next time I work on the design"*
curse you, past me!

afternoon. today I am finally feeling well enough that I am actually going to Do something. I received the titanium sheets for my leatherman holsters so I think I'll print a second version of the bucks to form them.

as we talk about the morality of vaccine patents

i think it is a nice time to also remember historical precident

jonas salk did not patent the polio vaccine. he went out of his way to make sure it was not patented.

he never got rich. he actively made sure he didn't get rich off of it.

but that history is full of stories about how for the rest of his life, jonas salk did not have to ever pay for a beer in any bar in this country. he would get on airplanes and once somebody recognized his name, the entire damn plane would stand up and clap for him. he constantly had hotel rooms comped, meals for free at restaurants, thus and so.

because he was surrounded by people who knew he had saved their children from having to ever consider the fear of an iron lung, and were overwhelmingly grateful for it.

he was always modest and demure when recognized thusly. but i think that when people start saying "well why else would someone make a vaccine, if not to get paid for it and hold the patent", i think it is good to remember these stories. the world did not punish jonas salk for not patenting the polio vaccine. the world loved him for it. maybe not in the structures that billionaires are most used to. but they did love him for it, in small ways, in humble ways, on the individual level.

Time to phone my old bank to work out why they keep emailing me about some account when I closed all my accounts with them months ago. This is going to be very boring I can tell.

Please send pet rat photos for @Iridaceae, she is upset that nobody has taken up the invitation in her bio yet :boost_ok:

Gonna get this embroidered in “live love laugh” style

Straight people are so alienated from each other through gender it's not even funny
“Handfish ... [have been given] the alternate name warty anglers.”

Guys I found my new band name

The wildest forensic stories are the ones where you pull at a loose thread and discover that you've got hold of a the tip of the tentacle of some kind of cthulhoid monster from the depths of hell. That's the story of Eliminalia, global fraudsters for hire.

The story starts with Qurium, a secure hosting provider that focuses on at-risk civil society groups, the kinds of people who piss off dictators with their own snatch-squads they can use against their enemies.

Incidentally how is everyone, being overworked has made me not be around much but I am finally relaxing on the patio for a few hours. Before I have to do a zillion chores and then go to work tonight :/

Boosts appreciated.
I'm close to moving back to Windows. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to hold oneself back, deny oneself better and easier accessibility in the name of open source, when many open source developers don't give a crap about accessibility, and/or don't educate themselves on it. KDE connect, GSConnect, all were inaccessible for one reason or another, not the least because of Gnome-shell's terrible accessibility issues. That was just the last straw. With the only thing holding me to Linux being Emacs+Emacspeak, I think its time to quit Linux and just use what actually works. It's interesting how being "free" just means being under the power and whim of other people, a mass of developers who have no insentive for accessibility, rather than a cohesive company who does. This is serious, and I want every developer to understand this, understand my deep frustration with FOSS.
